I get a lot of my staples at Asian super markets, mostly Ranch 99 on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. and Vien Dong on University. they have a lot of vegan friendly items and even the produce is more slanted to what I eat. This morning, after wasting time and buying nothing (always the best policy) at REI, I stopped at Ranch 99 for lemon grass and kombu (use it like a bay leaf when you make beans). While I’m not a coffee drinker, lately I’ve been stopping at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters in the middle of my longer coastal rides for an iced pick-me-up around my halfway point.
In Japan, canned coffee drinks have been popular for a long time. Despite many attempts, they’ve never caught on over here. Japanese grocers like Mitsuwa stock tons of them and the instant buzz is nice. The problem is that most of them contain milk and sugar. Today, I found this 1 liter box of Key Coffee in the refrigerated section at Ranch 99. It has no milk or sugar and packs a pretty major buzz. It also tastes pretty good. Don’t drink the hole thing at once. If you’re too lazy to make your own iced coffee, filling one of your water bottles with this stuff would be a pretty cool way to jack you up when you need it during a hike or ride.
